Collection: Hollandia
LOST 1743
Coast of the Scilly Isles, Southwest of England
Blown off course on her way to the East Indies, the Hollandia struck infamous Gunner Rock and sank in about 110 feet on water on July 13, 1743. There were no survivors. The wreck was discovered in September of 1971 by Rex Cowan, who began salvaging the Hollandia the next year. More than 30,000 silver coins were recovered, mostly Mexican 8 reales of the "pillar dollar" type minted from 1732 to 1742. Also salvaged were Spanish colonial silver cobs and Dutch silver ducatoons, including specimens minted as early as 1618.
